My Skincare Routine…

It’s a long one girls, it’s a long one. Grab a glass of… water (we’ll be good because it’s about skin), light a candle and get comfy.

This has been without a doubt the most requested blog post. I get asked multiple times a week about my skincare routine. You’re never going to achieve flawless looking makeup if the canvas is a mess.

I am psycho about my skin! Like, literally insane! We’ve been through my fear of wrinkles on numerous occasions, like I wanna look 21 forever! I look about 14 when I have no makeup but I can’t live my life not wearing makeup so we’ll settle for 21 😉

I feel like I need to give you some background on my skin before we get started so you get where I’m coming from with my insaneness. When I was in 5th/6th class in primary school I had seriously bad acne – like crazy bad! Yes I was literally 11 years old with the worst skin you’ve ever seen in your life. I swear I thank the gods that I had acne when I was that young instead of when I was in my late teens. Don’t get me wrong, it was extremely difficult to be 11 and get picked on for having bad skin but I got it out of the way at a young age. I was literally trying everything to clear up my skin from tablets to tropical ointments like Zineryt, drinking all the water in the world.. long story short all of this severely dried up my skin, we’re talking Sahara Dessert. But the acne went away when I was about 13/14 years old and I just started getting a few spots here and there.

Rock into my late teens/early 20’s and I was bate from doing sunbeds… I need to be tanned. It’s a need not a want haha. Sure at that stage I didn’t know what a wrinkle was so I didn’t care about doing several minutes a week and drying my skin up like a prune. What was I thinking?? If you’re going to do sunbeds will you just do me a favour and cover your face, neck and chest please?

So, here we are now, 25 and I’ve a few wrinkles (silent sob) from all the stuff I did to my skin when I was younger. However, over the past few weeks and months I’ve seriously reduced the wrinkles without the need for botox or fillers.. what are we? We’re winning! 😛

Morning Routine

I’m f’ing useless in the mornings, like leave me alone until 10am please.

Let me set the scene for you; my 7am, 7.15am and 7.30am alarms are all turned off, I roll out of the bed, slip into my cosy dressing gown and slippers, open the curtains, let Cooper out, brush my teeth and start my skincare…

Before we start can I just say I apologize that nothing is on the cheaper side, I just feel it is so important to invest in your skin, you’re going to have to live with your skin your entire life so it’s so important to look after it.

I can’t do the whole cleanse, tone, wash la la la when I just wake up, like I can’t. It’s too much so I just give my face a quick rinse with cold water to freshen it up. I then stroll back into my room, sit on the end of my bed by the window, put on a podcast, wrap myself up in a blanket and pull out my bag of tricks. Comfort is an essential part of my morning routine.

Step 1: Clarins Double Serum .. best thing I’ve ever used in my life. It smells like a spa treatment! It’s an anti-ageing treatment (which I’m all about) with tons of plant extracts (am I the only one that loves knowing I’ve the good stuff from plants on my face?) .. the next part I need to take from the website haha.. “it uses a hydrolipidic and biomimetic double formula to stimulate the five vital functions: hydration, nutrition, oxygenation, regeneration and protection.” Sure like hello?? Need I say more? This stuff has literally transformed my skin! If you’re going to buy anything buy this. You can get it in Debenhams, Boots, Sam McAuleys and Brown Thomas I think? For €72.. yes pricey but worth it!!

Clairns Double Serum

Step 2: Clarins Hydra-Essential Cooling Gel.. game changer. If you’re wearing a serum during the day it’s better to use a gel instead of a moisturizer because it’s not as heavy on the skin. The Clarins gel is unbelievable, I have genuinely fallen in love! Again, there’s a plant extract (I think all Clairns have plant extract?) that’s a natural hydration activator that boosts the skin’s hyaluronic acid production. Hyaluronic acid (I hope I’m spelling that right) is what keeps your skin looking plump and hydrated.. you know wrinkle free 😉 Again you can get it Debenhams, Boots, Sam McAuleys and Brown Thomas for €45 🙂

Step 3: Clarins ‘UV Plus’ SPF 50 Day Screen Multi-Protection.. I swear this whole post isn’t about Clairns, it’s just a brand that really works for my skin. SPF is vital for anti-ageing like VITAL! You need an SPF that’s higher than 30 on your face everyday to stop the signs of ageing.. and skin cancer! You need SPF even when it’s raining, we’re talking 365 days of the year because a good SPF blocks out UVA (present all of the time) and UVB (this is what causes sunburn) rays protecting your skin from damage from the environment as well as the sun. The Clairns one is €38 but it’s unbelievable because it also has an anti-pollutant and it’s transparent so you won’t be walking around with a face like Casper 🙂 You can purchase in the same places as above 🙂

Step 4: Origins ‘Ginzing’ Refreshing Eye Cream.. I’ve been using this stuff for about 2 years now and I love it!! It reduces puffiness, dark circles and bags! Magic I know! It has a kind of highlight effect to it that’s hard to explain but it instantly wakes up my eyes. You need the smallest amount like I’m talking minuscule and dab lightly around the eye using your ring finger. You can pick it up in Debenhams here for €29 🙂 (it’s a tiny pot but will last you months!).

Step 5: Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base.. I’m obsessed like genuinely obsessed. Get this for the smell alone. It’s oil free with a Shea butter base and has vitamins A, C and E. It’s the perfect base for makeup as it hydrates and softens the skin. It also can be used as a primer 🙂 It’s €52.50 and you can get it here. You only need half a pea size amount.. well I only use that much because clearly I’ve enough on my skin at that point.

Then I do my make-up and go about my day.

Make-Up Removal & Washing My Face

Take. Your. Make-up. Off. I don’t care how tired you are, what time of night it is, how many Malibu’s you’ve had, just take your make up off.. if not for the benefit of your skin then just for hygiene reasons alone. I literally feel sick at the thought of going into bed with make up on. Gawk.

So, there are 3 steps to my cleansing routine but only 2 products..

Step 1:MAC Cleanse Off Oil… this is my holy grail product for makeup removal. I swear the makeup will just glide off your face without having to pull at your skin! Put 2 pumps of the oil into your hands, rub together and then onto your dry face and massage in gently (watch the makeup slide off) then rinse your face with luke warm (is that what it’s called? haha).

Step 2: A second cleanse with the MAC Cleanse Off Oil – this is to make sure the makeup is 100% gone. Just feel how soft your face is after this! You can get the cleanse off oil here for €28.50 or any MAC store.

Step 3: Origins Checks & Balance Face Wash.. I’ve used this for as long as I can remember! It’s the only face wash I’ve used that really suits my skin and doesn’t make me break out. It leaves my face feeling so fresh and clean! It’s full of natural ingredients which I love 🙂 Take a pea sized amount and work it into a damp face.. be careful not to get it in your eyes, it does sting! You can pick it up here for €25 🙂

I just realized I spend €53.50 just to wash my face..whoooops.

Night Time Routine

Can we set the scene again? I love setting the scene. Aaron thinks I’m literally insanewhenever he sees me do my skincare routine. I’m in my pajamas’s, the lights are off, my salt lamp is lighting along with any candle that happens to be in the room and music is playing on Spotify (this one). Is this excessive? Obv! But it’s like a form of meditation for me, these 10 mins are literally 10 mins just for me and I’m in my absolute element ya know? 🙂

Step 1) Clarins Double Serum.. yes we are using it again. It will change your life. One pump.. actually I forgot to mention while ago the nozzle is designed for morning and night so you can twist it to alternate the amount you’re using – small amount in the morning, larger amount at night! Fab! Anyway.. one pump, and press it into your skin from the inside of your face out.

Step 2) Clarins Multi-Active Night Cream.. luxurious is the word I would use. Plant extracts again lads.. my fav! It reduces the appearance of fine lines, improves radiance and hydrates the skin.. hiya! ❤ Debenhams, Boots, Sam McAuleys and Brown Thomas stock it for €60.

Step 3) Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream.. Okay, being totally honest, I don’t swear by this product. It’s just something I bought on a whim when I was purchasing my Face Base and it’s good and all but I bet you’d find a better one.. actually if any of you have a night eye cream you swear by will ye let me know the name? 🙂 ..Anyway, I just pat this lightly around the eye. It’s €21 and you can get it here.

Step 4) Acnecide.. this is the best thing everrrr to get rid of spots!! You just need a tiny bit just on the spot and it will be gone in the morning when you wake up. I don’t use this every night but it’s great when I have a little break out. You can get it here for €14.99.

There you go now. Daily and nightly routine done

So I have a few because I can’t just deal with one, my face needs different things at different times so I have invested in a few that I love.

Mask 1) Origins ‘Clear Improvement’ Active Charcoal Pore Clearing Mask.. if I have a break out I lash this stuff all over my skin and leave it on for at least 30 minutes and I literally wake up spot free the next day. Again, I’ve used this for about 3 years and I love it! I use this once a week or when I feel like I’m breaking out. You can purchase here for €30.

Mask 2) Origins ‘Drink Up Intensive’ Overnight Mask… the absolute dream I swear! If you want your skin to feel like the most hydrated baby’s ass in the world then this is the product for you. I put this on last (after all of the above) and sleep in it and I wake up with the most hydrated skin of all time. You can get it here for €30. I use it once or twice a week depending on how my skin feels 🙂

Mask 3) Kiehl’s ‘Rare Earth’ Deep Pore Cleansing Mask… it does what it says on the tin. It unclogs all the dirt and impurities from your pores. It also minimizes pores! Is there anything worse than large pores? I have them and they drive me mental! You can get this mask here for €28.50.

A Few Extra Points

  1. I dermaplane my skin .. I mentioned this in a previous blog. This is essentially shaving your face to remove hair and dead skin cells. I do this once every 3 to 4 weeks. No your hair does not grow back thicker and blacker.. do you see me rocking a goatee? No.
  2. I do facial massage.. I wish I had the patience to do this everyday but as you can see from above, I’ve enough going on haha. I try to do this three times a week if I can. I bought an electric facial massager from Amazon to make life easier. You can pick up the same one here for €7!! It’s on sale! I paid €14 for mine pfffft. Facial massage is so important for lymphatic drainage.. if you want me to get science-y let me know and I’ll do a full post on facial massage.
  3. I drink a heap of water.. like don’t get me wrong there will be days where a glass of water doesn’t pass my lips but in general I will drink over 2L a day.
  4. I don’t use beaded exfoliators.. why are we rubbing little hard rocks on our face?? I use the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish with the muslin cloth. You can get it here for €21. Or I use the Mario Badescu Glycolic Grapefruit Cleansing Lotion. This lotion is a liquid exfoliator with no beads! Pop it onto a cotton pad once or twice a week and it will remove dead skin cells. I will say, do not use this everyday as it is too harsh for daily use. I figured this out the hard way when I was covered in spots. You can get it here for €19.50.MABA0118F_1_L.jpg

I really do apologize for the price of everything but I can’t help it, my skin needs it. I have tried cheaper brands in the past believe me but they either make me break out or make my skin look dull. I wish I could just slap on a bit of Nivea and go about my life but it ain’t me. A cheaper brand that I have tried and I would recommend if you don’t want to fork out 100’s of euros is The Ordinary. They have loads of natural products, I’ve tried a few myself and some of the girls swear by them. Their website is here if you wanna have a nose.

If you wanna follow my skincare routine I’d advise getting it bit by bit, that’s what I did. Gradually change your routine, add in one or two new products every few weeks for two reasons.. one, you won’t have to take out a small loan to buy all the products and two, your skin won’t be able for an entire new skincare routine over night.

I know this was a very long and detailed post so please send me a message if you want me to go into any further detail or if you have any questions on any of the products I mentioned above 🙂

I hope you got something from this ❤

bare face

Bare faced me 😛

Until next time,

April x
